June in South Africa is not merely a date on the calendar. It is a roar echoing through decades; a reminder that young voices, especially those of young women, have always been the conscience of our nation. In 1976, they marched for the right to be educated in their own mother tongue. Today, in 2026, a new generation of young women is being called to march for a different but equally urgent cause: the right to a living, breathing planet.
To the young women of Soweto, Cape Flats, Mamelodi, and Gqeberha: This Youth Month, we are not just asking you to take part. We are asking you to lead.
The Mantle is Already Yours
For too long, the images of “conservation” and “climate action” have been dominated by voices far removed from your reality. But you know the truth. You see the floods swallowing homes in KZN. You feel the heatwaves cracking the soil of the Eastern Cape. You see the ravaging fires in the Cape Flats and the Table Mountain; destroying ecosystems and damaging species. You witness the water shortages that turn your community’s daily routine into a crisis and yet as a country we do not proactively invest in water resources management.
You cannot be just victims of climate change; you are the most innovative problem-solvers it has ever seen.
Look around you. Women like Nzambi Matee in Kenya are turning plastic waste into paving bricks. Young female rangers in the Greater Kruger are using drones to stop poaching. In Khayelitsha, young women are building vertical gardens on shack roofs, proving that biodiversity doesn’t need a national park; it needs a planter box and a purpose.
Sustainability is a Justice Issue
When we talk about climate justice, we are talking about your right to clean air, nutritious food, and safe water. We are talking about the fact that a girl in Limpopo should not have to walk five hours to fetch water that is too dirty to drink.
Leading in sustainability means understanding that the environment is not a luxury; it is the foundation of our economy, our health, and our dignity. You have the power to build a South Africa where a green job is not a charity case, but a career of prestige. Where solar installations are led by women-owned co-ops. Where the boardrooms of mining and agriculture are forced to listen to the young women who will inherit the land. And our climate interventions programmes stay just and inclusive.
Biodiversity: Our Untold Story
South Africa is the seventeenth most biodiverse country on Earth. From the fynbos of the Cape Floristic Region; the grasslands of the Drakensberg and the Centre of endemism in Mkambati (Wild Coast) we hold a botanical treasure that heals, feeds, and clothes the world.
But that treasure is burning. It is being poached. It is being paved over, and our natural resources are being plunged to extinction. We need to say; not under our watch.
Young women, you are the natural custodians of this heritage. Your grandmothers were seed keepers. Your mothers were herbalists. You are the data scientists, the biotech innovators, and the community organisers who can digitise that ancient wisdom. Do not wait for permission. Start an indigenous nursery. Build a composting app. Lead a river clean-up that goes viral on TikTok. Biodiversity management is not just science; it is self-respect.
Lead with Purpose. Invest in Yourself.
You cannot pour from an empty cup. To save Africa, you must first invest in you.
Learn relentlessly: Whether it is a free online course on circular economies or a workshop on renewable energy finance; arm yourself with skills. Join a free webinar on climate resilience; biodiversity management; water resilience etc. Knowledge is the only currency that never devalues.
Build your sisterhood: Find two or three other young women who share your fire. One will be your coder, another your fundraiser, another your voice. Isolated; you are a drop. Together, you are a flood.
Rise, Sister, Lead: This Youth Month, Claim Your Place at the Front of Africa’s Green FutureRest unapologetically: The weight of saving a continent is heavy. Healing is part of the activism. You cannot lead a movement if you are burnt out. So; engage in self-care and pace yourself.
Africa’s Future Depends on You
Let us speak the truth: The world’s climate crisis and biodiversity loss will be won or lost in Africa. And Africa’s battle will be won or lost by its young women.
When you decide to study marine biology in Durban, you are defending our oceans.
When you start a waste-recycling business in Diepsloot, you are creating jobs.
When you refuse to accept a dirty coal plant next to your school, you are writing a new constitution for the planet.
The youth of 1976 showed us the power of saying “Enough.” Now, the young women of 2026 must show the world the power of saying “Here is the solution and we are ready to be counted”
This Youth Month, step into your power. Not because it is graceful. Not because it is easy. But because the soil of Africa is calling its daughters home to heal it.
Rise, sister. Lead. The future is green, and it is female.
